Last King of Scotland

This afternoon I finally got around to watching Last King of Scotland, this was a movie that I had wanted to see the theaters when it was out but just never got around to seeing it.

The Last King of Scotland tells the story of the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin during the 1970’s as seen by his personal physician. Forest Whitaker plays the Role of General Idi Amin Dada and James McAvoy plays the role of his personal doctor, Dr. Nicholas Garrigan.

Forest Whitaker does an amazing job portraying Amin, I had done some reading on Amin and had seen news clips of him while working on my history degree. Whitaker looks a lot like Amin and was able to portray similar mannerisms. It was really amazing watching the movie you would swear you where actually watching Idi Amin on the screen.  He deserved the Oscar he received for best actor for his performance in the movie.

I would strongly recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in Africa or history. The movie starts with Idi Amin just taking power and ends with the Israeli defense forces raid on Entebbe. It is pretty accurate telling of the events surrounding Idi Amin a dictator who was larger than life and who’s official title was “His Excellency President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Sea, and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular.”

Great movie well worth watching.
