Historically I always get myself something for Christmas and also my birthday. This year I got myself a Samsung 46” 1080P LCD TV (LNT4661F) along with a Phillips up converting 1080P DVD player, DVP5982. I have been looking at getting a large good TV for a couple of years now but I had always put it off. I always had another TV and saw little need to upgrade and the prices where always coming down. Starting about the middle of the summer I really started to seriously look, the price where coming down and the technology was getting better. Also I had come problems get virtual console games running on the Nintendo Wii that Heather got me.
I have been really happy the Samsung 46” TV, to be honest I have no complaints about it. The color is amazing and clarity of the picture is great also, the sound is ok. I decided not put in a surround system at this time since Heather and I live in town house and I could see putting in a surround sound system would just result in our neighbors hating us. The LNT4661F has lots of inputs so there is really no need for a receiver which is a nice bonus. For anyone who is looking for an amazing 46” TV I would highly recommend this unit.
I am also happy with the up converting DVD player that I picked up for the most part, Phillips DVP5982. Now I am sure you are asking why I did not get an HD DVD player or a Blue Ray player to go with my new high definition TV. I decided against this for a couple of reasons the first being I did not want to get stuck on a format and find my format loss’s the war the happening between HD-DVD and Blue Ray. I have had my new TV and DVD player for almost a month and at the time format wars where going on. Now it looks like Blue Ray is going to win the war which stinks since I hate all things that is Sony. So since I hate Sony so much I would have gone with an HD-DVD player and would now be stuck with a format that is going to die like Beta tapes did.
Anyway I have watched several movies are on the DVP5982 and they have looked good, the player does a good job up converting to 1080P. My one complaint about the Philips DVP5982 is the remote is horrible; it extremely small and the buttons are not well laid out. Not the end of the world by any means but you would think that in 2008 that all companies would be able to design a decent remote.
I have connected both the DVD Player and Rogers PVR to my Samsung LNT4661F with HDMI cables from Zen cable, or as I call it Startech’s fancy line. I would highly recommend that you everyone use HDMI cables when possible it well worth the investment for amount of cable clutter they reduce. You also get a better signal with they me etc, you have to use them to get true 1080P Signals.
Probably the biggest improvement that I noticed since setting up my new TV is that I am actually playing games on the Wii now. I picked up the high definition Wii cables when I ordered the TV and it is amazing the difference it makes in the picture quality. Before, I would get headaches when I player games that required any reading, which is all the games that I enjoy the Wii. Now since I have moved to the high definition cables I the text is not blurry anymore and I don’t get the eye strain or migraine I did before.
Anyway in conclusion, the Samsung 46” 1080P LNT466IF LCD TV is amazing and I highly recommend it. The Phillips DVP5982 up converting DVD player is also an excellent buy but Phillips needs to figure out how to design a remote. Again it not that hard.
