Monday was the straw the broke them camel’s back with me and my Mazda 3. I had gone to see Heather at the University of Waterloo and was maybe the university for maybe 30 minutes. I came out and got in my car and it would not turn on, I would turn the ignition and every light on the dash would turn on but no engine noise at all. I called Mazda road Side assistance, AKA CAA and they sent out a tow truck. Monday was the straw the broke them camel’s back with me and my Mazda 3. The guy from Mazda Road Side Assistance though maybe it was a battery, although he conceded it made no sense since the car had only sat there thirty minutes. But we tried to jump my Mazda with no luck at all so he towed it to the nearest Mazda dealership. I was not happy at this point this is the third major incident with this car since I purchased itThe first time the transmission failed was on the 401 one day, I was doing about 120 and all of a sudden the car dropped to 1st gear. This caused the RPM’s on the engine to red lined and the front of the car just drop, luckily there was no one right behind because I probably would have been killed. I got the car back to Guelph in basically 2nd gear and they replaced the transmission, axels’, drive shaft and some computers. All under warranty was not a big deal, stuff happens especially when you buy a car in its first model year. Anyway after getting the car back the transmission failed yet again and they had to basically the same repair two weeks later but this time I had to have it towed in.
With the latest incident I immediate thought it was another transmission. But apparently my car not starting was a figment of my imagination, Heather’s imagination and the CAA’s driver’s imagination. I called Mazda the next morning and they can find nothing wrong with my car at all! It started fine and they where confused why it was towed in.So there is clearly something wrong with my car again and I need a reliable car I can not have one that is going to continue to fail like this. Let along the fact I simply do not trust it all any more, I have no confidence that it will start at any given moment.
I am not blaming Mazda for this really, there is always a chance you can get a Lemon and I clearly got one when I purchased my Mazda 3. But pardon the pun it has soured me towards Mazda and I really don’t know if I would buy another Mazda vehicle at this point. After this latest incident I decided my Mazda 3 had to go, so yesterday I went to Guelph Nissan dealership and ordered a Black All Wheel Drive Nissan Rogue, with Leather and Technology package. It is going to take about seven to ten days for them to get me my new truck. I am really excited to get my new toy at get rid of my lemon Mazda 3 GT.

i think the starter or the ignition was stuck maybe thats why all the lights were on . it stated fine at the shop from towing it some times automatic transmissions and some times standard the starter gets stuck and will not recoil back in its housing thats why some times you see people rocking cars back and forth when a car will not start.hope you have better luck with your new car
Hi Rick,
It could be my Fiancée heather had the car all weekend and she noticed that a couple of times the car was very slow to turn over.
At this point I am just looking forward to being rid of it.

I have a 2004 Mazda 3 Sport which I had leased and this January I excercised the option to buy. Tha card has been serviced by a dealer all this time and last week (four months after buying) one morning when I put the rear in reverse, it made a noise and was driveable but as it is an automatic, the car would not engage in 4th grear.
Took it to mazda dealer and was advised that the transmission is gone and would cost $3300.00 to place. God! a four year old car and the transmission busted….have a 1995 civic and have had no problem.
I would never recomend a Mazda. I have had other issues with it too but as it was under warranty at that time, they fixed it.
Hi Raz
Sorry to hear about your experience that you had with your three. It is interesting I have received seven emails on this topic from various people saying they have a similar transmission issues. It also ways with Mazda 3 2004 Sedan GT or Sport editions, I have not heard of anyone having any issues with the smaller engines.
I still do find it interesting that Mazda designed the drive train on the Mazda 3 in 2005, a year after this model was released. Makes me think that the 2004 Mazda 3’s had serious transmission issues causing the redesign, I mean why else would they go through this expense?
I recently bought a used 2004 Mazda 3 and didn’t even have it a week and the transmission leaked. It was in the shop 11 days. Then I picked it up last friday and Sunday the transmission wouln’t engage in 4th Gear. Of course, I get rid of my 1996 Sunfire which I never had problems with and now I have everything wrong with this LEMON.
i really cant say much…. I have a 04 Mazda 3 GT and i tell you its been the best thing i have every got. No problems its a great looking car and it runs so smooth…. So really maybe you guys have had no luck thats too bad Its my 2nd Mazda and I have had no problems at all ….. Ive had GM and that i dont recommend its horrible…… ana
Anyone having a problem with clunking noise coming from front end of the Mazda 3. Mine is a GS sedan, 2 litre automatic.
Noise started at 4,000 kms and despite several visits to Mazda dealer - no fix.
Clunk occurs when you ease on or off gas, and sounds like a driveline snatch.
The dealer agrees that it’s there, and actually did a fix at the 32,000 km service which entailed re=packing axle hubs with grese, but the sound resumed the next day.
Curious thing is - the Mazda 3 sedan loaner loaner they gave me had exactly the same problem at 13,000 kms.
Makes me wonder if this is a factory/build problem.
